The highly anticipated peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul have ended abruptly after less than two hours, with no sign of progress. Ukrainian sources described Russia’s demands—reportedly including a withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from their own territory-as “unrealistic” and “detached from reality.

During the May 16 meeting in Istanbul, the Ukrainian and Russian delegations discussed a potential meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin currently has no plans to travel to Istanbul for peace talks with Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Thursday, but the Russian delegation is there and ready to meet the Ukrainian team.
